The new regulations require travelers from 60 visa-exempt countries (including the United States, Argentina, Canada, Japan, and others) to apply for ETIAS. These nationalities (UK citizens included) must receive an ETIAS authorization before reaching the European port of entry.

Many are now wondering whether the ETIAS is a traditional Schengen visa in all but name. The answer is no: let’s see why.

What is the difference between an ETIAS visa waiver and a regular Schengen visa?

A standard Schengen visa and the new ETIAS visa waiver have significant differences. First and foremost, the ETIAS application will be entirely online and take only a few minutes. Travelers will no longer be required to visit the relevant consulate or embassy to obtain a standard visa, as they did previously.

Moreover, travelers using ETIAS will be permitted to stay in Europe for up to 90 days after arriving and transit freely throughout the Schengen area.

The ETIAS waiver will be valid for three years, after which time the passenger will have to reapply and pay the ETIAS fee again. The entire procedure shouldn’t take over 10 minutes, offering a stress-free journey for all passengers.

What is the purpose of the European Union establishing a new visa waiver system?

The European Union is exploring new approaches to address illegal immigration, health problems, and terrorism. In the near future, greater collaboration and harmonization between border officers and security systems across the Schengen area will be vital to ensure the safety of European borders. As a result, the EU will gradually develop new initiatives that emphasize common standards and standardized pre-screening and authorization procedures.

The ETIAS is part of such plans. The European Union’s primary security policy is to protect its citizens while also ensuring that tourists get the most out of their trip. Thanks to the new online approach, passengers flying to Europe should expect fewer queues and troubles at the border and more transparent inspections by officials.

How can I apply for an ETIAS visa waiver?

An ETIAS is simple to obtain: all you need is a passport, a valid email account, and enough money to cover the ETIAS application fee (as well as a secure and stable internet connection). The online application takes 10 minutes to complete, and you will receive an acceptance or rejection in less than 24 hours.

No prior travel experience is required to access embassies, consulates, and other government offices. After a grace period to acclimate border officers and visitors, the ETIAS will become mandatory in 2023.

Does the ETIAS visa guarantee entry into Europe?

No. It’s important to note that getting an ETIAS does not guarantee entry into Europe. Border inspectors have the last say and may request more paperwork to back up the information presented.

This is because the ETIAS is not a visa per se but a visa waiver to smooth the processing and screening of travelers from ‘trusted’ nations. Travelers required to complete ETIAS will enjoy not queuing embassies and consulates to ask for a short travel visa, only having to submit some essential info online before receiving the authorization.

The UK's exit from the EU has sparked speculation about the future of their relationship. This applies to what Brexit means for tourism and other industries. Soon, the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will go live. One of the questions on everyone's mind is whether British nationals need to apply for ETIAS. Thus, it's no surprise that the impact of ETIAS on UK citizens is a concern for many. European authorities have confirmed that British citizens will be eligible for ETIAS.

In 2023, ETIAS will be operational and become mandatory. It isn't easy to say how the system will operate as we have limited information today. It's safe to presume, though, that it'll be similar to the US ESTA program. Some distinctions are already known: for example, with ETIAS, tourists will be able to stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days. The ETIAS visa waiver in itself will have a validity of three years, and during this time, travelers may be able to enter the Schengen area multiple times.
