Welcome to Europe
ETIAS, European Travel Information and Authorisation system, will be enforced from 2024. Non-EU citizens who do not need a visa to travel to Europe will have to comply with the ETIAS requirement.
The system’s main goals are to improve the safety of EU’s External Borders as well as prevent Security, Epidemiological, and Irregular Migratory Risks.
ETIAS for France aims to make travel easier and more efficient by reducing border check times by 40%. You will need only 20 minutes to fill out the online application form with simple questionnaire and submit it alongside your Biometric Passport.
As a UK citizen you will not need to apply for Standard Schengen Visa to visit EU, EFTA and European Microstates with Open Borders member states. However, you will still need to apply for ETIAS authorisation online.
First, you will need to fill out the application form. It consists of several parts, including general questions about your personal information, travel history, medical and criminal records and other safety-related topics.
Once you are done with the application form, you need to submit it alongside your valid Biometric Passport and pay the application fee with a credit or debit card. According to the EU’s law, a passport is considered as valid if it expires no sooner than three months from the intended date of arrival within the Union.
Usually, the system will grant you the authorisation in several hours. It is estimated that ETIAS-approval rate will be around 95%. In some cases, ETIAS France officer might ask you to submit additional documentation or attend a scheduled online-interview.
ETIAS for France intends to make travel to European Union Schengen area easier and safer procedure. After the launch of ETIAS system, you will need to go through several steps until you get your travel authorisation, that will be valid for the next three years.
First, you will need to fill out the ETIAS visa application form and answer simple questions regarding your personal information. Once you submit the application form alongside the first page of the passport, you will get the message of approval or rejection within the minutes. In rare cases you might be asked to submit additional documentation or attend an interview.
ETIAS authorisation will enable you to travel to 26 EU and Schengen area member states, all EFTA member states and European Microstates with Open Borders for 90 days within 180-day period for three years.
Please note that ETIAS France cannot be transferred between the passports. If you apply for a new passport, you need to apply for a new ETIAS for France too.
It is estimated that imposing ETIAS system will reduce Border Check Time by 40%. This is because all general information that should be checked by border control officer on spot will already be verified in advance. Besides, smart gates at the border will enable you to enter the country quickly, eliminating the need of standing in a tiring queue at the control.
The new ETIAS application is, first and foremost, a security measure. Pre-travel screening of the visitors enables the EU Law Enforcement Services to identify possible security, epidemiological or migratory risks. This way honest travelers will still be able to enjoy traveling, while suspicious visitors will be denied entry more effectively.
Cross-checking the information of travelers with security-related databases will improve the ability to detect and prevent potential terrorist threats. Automated smart gates at borders will reduce the workload of Border Control Officers and allow them to respond more quickly.
In 2021 the number of illegal migrants staying in different EU countries was around 700,000, marking the increase of the number by 20% compared to 2020. By launching the ETIAS visa waiver, the European Union intends to decrease the rate of illegal migration and provide more flexible and safer environment for its citizens and international travelers.
Thanks to flexible ETIAS France application procedures, you will be able to travel to Europe much easier. This is especially suitable if you intend to travel to several Schengen countries at once. If you are traveling to France, Spain and Germany, you will only need to apply for one ETIAS authorisation and use the same barcode in every country until its expiration date.
As of today, the nationals of 59 visa-exempt countries are eligible for ETIAS authorisation. Considering that the UK is no longer part of the European Union, since January 2020, the UK citizens will need to apply for ETIAS Visa Waiver prior traveling to the EU, EFTA and European Microstates with Open Borders member countries.
Full List of ETIAS Eligible Countries Include:
ETIAS Requirements apply to visitors traveling to any of the EU(except Ireland) and EFTA member states and all European Microstates with Open Borders. If you are traveling to Ireland, you WILL NOT need to apply for ETIAS visa waiver.

Yes. Since January 2020 the UK is no longer member of the European Union. Because of this UK citizens qualify as the “third country nationals” meaning that they have to apply for ETIAS authorisation like other 59 ETIAS-eligible country nationals.
The application process is very straightforward. You, as a UK national, will need to fill out the application form and submit it with your passport online.
After submission you will get the message of approval or rejection within hours. In some cases, you might need to submit additional documents or attend an online interview.
As of today, all international visitors, aged 12 and up, traveling to France are required to show the proof of EMA-approved vaccination, negative PCR Test taken within 72 hours before departure or negative Antigen (Rapid) Test taken within 48 hours before departure.
